The Lemon’s Drop

|2 min. read|

When someone you love loses a loved one, it can be difficult to find the right words, or even figure out how to support them. As someone who has unfortunately experinced intense loss I wanted to share what helped me and my family through such unimaginable grief.

Food:

The last thing you want to do after such a loss is eat let alone go grocery shopping and prepare a meal. Our village showered us with goodies and here are the most comforting things we received in my opinion:

  • Egg Bake Casserole
  • Rotisserie Chicken
  • Baked vegetables
  • Feta & Tomato Pasta Bake
  • Homemade Soup
  • Homemade Cookies
  • Prepared Fruit and Fruit Salad
  • My favorite pizza
  • My favorite candies

Check in’s:

There is only so much to be said about a loss and your loved one may not know what will help them along or how to continue after such a loss. What helped me the most was being treated normally. Once my friends and family addressed my loss, offered their sympathies, all I wanted was support and conversation. I found it really helpful for my friends to check in gently about what I had for lunch, a subtle yet gentle reminder to eat even when its the last thing you want to do. You can also ask them what they are doing for the day, the answer may be nothing and that’s okay, but they may think about something they can do to comfort themselves like read, craft, or sit outside whatever it may be, it’s another gentle reminder to help them to take care of themselves.

Flowers:

I always used to hate recieving flowers, until I lost my mom. It truly brought be comfort for my living room to covered in flowers all to remember my beautiful mama. It’s hard to explain the peace and comfort a room full of flowers brings, but I remember being thankful for them every time I walked into the room.
