I have always wanted to host a murder mystery party and what better excuse than my birthday? If you’ve been looking for a party theme that gets your guests hootin’, hollerin’, and fully committed to the fun, a Wild West murder mystery is it.
Between dramatic accusations, cowboy hats, and a saloon-style feast, this party theme brings unforgettable memories.
Here’s exactly how I pulled it off and how you can too.
Step 1: Choose Your Murder Mystery
If you’re feeling extra creative, you can absolutely write your own murder mystery. (I’ve written a few in the past!) But this time around, I wanted to focus more on decor, food, and creating a full experience so I purchased a kit from Masters of Mystery.
They have fun themes to choose from, but I specifically wanted something:
- Easy for guests to dress up for
- Simple accents to mimic
That’s how I landed on High Noon at Dead Man’s Saloon and it did not disappoint.
The kit included:
- Character scripts for each guest
- Predesigned Invites
- A slideshow to guide the party
- Costume suggestions
- Game Instructions
Basically, everything you need to run the show without stress.
Step 2: Assign Characters & Build Anticipation
Once I received the kit, I carefully reviewed each character and assigned roles to my guests based on personality. (This part is so fun!)
Then I sent each guest:
- Their character script
- Costume suggestions
- A little encouragement to fully commit
Sending scripts ahead of time builds anticipation and gives everyone a chance to practice their drawl.
Pro tip: Print out copies of scripts for the night of the party and don’t forget pens! Guests love jotting down suspicions while mingling and interrogating one another.
Step 3: Keep the Guest List Intentional
Murder mystery parties work best when:
- The group isn’t too large
- Guests feel comfortable with one another
- People are willing to get a little silly
For this party, I invited friends who already knew each other and would embrace the experience. When guests feel safe to be playful, the whole night levels up.
Smaller groups = bigger personalities.
Step 4: Set the Scene with Wild West Decor 🌵
The decor doesn’t have to be complicated, it just needs to feel immersive.
Here’s what I used:
- A Wild West party decor box (Amazon find!)
- DIY “Most Wanted” posters (using guest photos I designed in Canva — huge hit!)

The key is leaning into the theme enough that guests feel like they’ve stepped into a saloon at high noon.
Step 5: Encourage Easy, Budget-Friendly Costumes
The Wild West theme is perfect because it’s so accessible. No one needs an elaborate costume.
Here’s what worked great:
- Thrifted vests and plaid shirts
- Cowboy hats
- Boots
- Dollar store snap guns
- Nerf guns for dramatic flair
It doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect! Half the fun is seeing everyone’s creative interpretations.
Step 6: Serve a Saloon-Worthy Menu 🍗🥂
Food is part of the experience! I kept it fun, simple, and slightly Southern-inspired. Since the title of the kit was “High Noon” we leaned into a Brunch affair:
- Chicken and waffles
- Fresh fruit
- Egg bake
- Cowboy Caviar
- “Snake Oil Spritzers” (a themed mocktail/cocktail)
- Chamagne with a splash of sour green apple liquer
- Themed names make everything more festive even if it is just a simple two ingredient drink.
- Homemade Cactus cupcakes

Why You Should Host One
Here’s what I loved most about hosting a Wild West murder mystery party:
- Everyone participates
- There are built-in conversation starters
- It feels interactive and different from a typical dinner party
- Guests leave talking about it for weeks
It’s immersive.
It’s fun.
It’s hilarious.
And it brings people together in such a unique way.
If you’ve been on the fence about hosting a murder mystery, consider this your sign. You don’t need perfection. You just need a theme, a little prep, and friends willing to play along.
Now saddle up and start planning. Your saloon awaits. 🤠✨
